The Ultimate Cheat Sheet For Savings
The Ultimate Cheat Sheet For Savings We all want to save money wherever possible. Whether you are saving for a house deposit, or just want to take that dream holiday, it can be hard to find ways to cut back. It doesnât always have to be difficult, and there are some easy ways you can make changes to increase your money. All it takes is a few changes, as we can reveal below. Bring your own lunch to work. Ok, so this might seem like an obvious tip, but it really can make a massive difference to your bank balance. By taking a healthy meal and some snacks from home, youâre not going to be tempted to spend money on an expensive shop-bought lunch. It could also help your waistline too as youâll know exactly whatâs in your food. If the average meal deal is around £4, then thatâs £20 a week saved straight away. Sort out your finances. If your credit card repayments arenât making a dent in the balance, then it could be time to look at an interest-free balance transfer deal. This can make paying off credit card debt a lot easier as you are stopping any additional interest going on the balance, meaning youâll clear your debt sooner. Just make sure you donât spend any more on the new card as the chances are that new purchases will incur interest. Remortgage for a better deal. You could save thousands by switching your mortgage to a cheaper rate. It pays to revisit your mortgage deal after the end of every deal you sign up to. Just remember to make sure there arenât any fees for switching, or at least factor those in when looking to switch. Set up a spreadsheet. This is a great way of keeping on top of your household budget. If you can see where every single penny is going, it can help you to see where you can make cutbacks. You can also start shopping around for better deals on your energy, phone provider and the internet. These savings all add up. Use loyalty cards. Having loyalty cards for shops you use a lot can be rewarding over the long term. You get points every time you shop with them, and they can soon add up. You get vouchers which you can use for money off your next shop, or you can change some of them for other things such as days out and meals in certain restaurants. It feels great knowing that you have a free day out just because you use a loyalty card. Always ask âdo I need this?â It can be tempting to buy something just because itâs cheap or in the sale, but always ask if you are going to need it. Chances are, if itâs not something you intended to buy, you wonât need it. By always taking the time to consider a purchase, youâll save money on impulse buying. That way, you can save you money for what you need. Image Source Main: 401(K) 2012

Can You See the End From the Beginning - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Can You See the End From the Beginning - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career How a pop song can help you. âI can see the end as it begins â¦â Taylor Swift in her song âWildest Dreamsâ I donât often quote Taylor Swift songs, but I happened to hear this line in the song recently and it got me thinking: Is Taylor Swift a visionary? Are her lyrics also secret plans to build a business? Are relationships and businesses that closely aligned? Yes, Perhaps and Yes These are my answers to these semi-rhetorical questions. I think my answers are not too surprising. For as long as music has been created there have been parallels to relationships and some of those parallels can also be applied to business. So, is Taylor Swift a visionary? I think the answer is an absolute yes. Shes been very successful in her country and pop career. No one can or should hold that against her. Are her lyrics a secret plan to build a business? I donât know about that. Youâll have to decide that for yourself. But, there are a lot of parallels to personal and business relationships. What am I talking about? In Taylor Swifts song Wildest Dreams she has a line that says âI can see the end as it beginsâ which to me says that we should look for the end at the beginning. Which is just saying the same thing is a slightly different way. Which is also a nice parallel to one of the 7 Habits in the classic book by Stephen Covey The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Habit 2: Begin With The End In Mind This may be what Taylor Swift was thinking about when she wrote the lyrics. Of course, a lot of relationships that are personal dont start like this. There are too many other factors that dont let people see the end as theyre seeing the beginning. An Acquired Skill Being able to see the end as it beginning is a difficult skill to master. As hard as it may be ⦠it is very beneficial to look at the end while youre looking at the beginning. One of the questions Ive asked people I know in business and to the people I have mentored over the years is: What is your exit strategy? The reason I ask this question is because it applies to careers as much as it applies to personal and business relationships. Its hard. Because youre forcing someone whos really excited about the beginning of something new to consider the end game, the end stage, the end of this good thing. Envision the End to have a Better Beginning Envisioning the end is as important as getting started. Thinking about how this thing you are considering will end up is important. Again itâs hard, and it may not be the thinking you want to consider. It may not entail conversations you want to have and host. But, by taking this long view you will be much better served in the long run. Both for your interests and for the others involved in this effort. As hard as it may be, it is important to think about, consider, and evaluate what the end stage might look like. When you are able to do this consistently and effectively you will stand out in your career. Of course, no one wants to really think about how their relationships may end whether its for business or personal. But, and this is important, its worthwhile to consider what it might look like upfront so that you can plan it into the overall relationship. This is a lot easier to say in a business relationship because you can take some of the emotion out of it. And I highly recommend that you take this step. That you do take the time to evaluate what the end stage will look like. Those that can do this effectively will stand out in their careers. Not just in their business relationships, but also in their personal relationships. Is Taylor Swift a business guru and visionary? Ill leave that as an exercise for the reader. You can make up your own mind on whether you think a pop star that is worth something north of $200 million is as much of a musical star as she is a business star and genius. Are you a Business guru and visionary? Thats up to you to decide, find and to execute upon. Now go out and make your own kind of music.

Be Unpopular - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Be Unpopular - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career On Sunday night, I had dinner at RockSugar in Century City (the Jetson-style skyscraper park in Los Angeles). Itâs typically impossible to get into, unless you are willing to wait a few hours. Along with my âIâm hungry now!â family, I waltzed into this one-of-a-kind Pan Asian palace, which is lined with golden statutes of Thai Buddha heads twice as tall as the tallest man I know and burning fire pits enclosed in shimmering glass throughout the cabana style outdoor seating area. When the rest of the world goes right you go left We enjoyed a ten-course tasting menu. On a whim, we bought an enamel belt buckle cobbled by an artisan oceans away, which we saw on the waiters who were walking rather than running around the room. The maître de brought it over to us, himself. Three weeks ago, also on a Sunday, we rolled into Blue Plate Oysterette, a hot as Lady Gaga dining spot in Santa Monica where the vibe is so cool, Iâm not sure I belong there, even when I finally get a table. Although when I do it is cheek to jowl with Christian Bale, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth (agent/betrothed). Try the macaroni and cheese with lobster; itâs to die for. Are you seeing a pattern here? Last Sunday night was the Oscars, featuring the more famous golden statue. All the celebrities and their support personnel: agents, managers and such folks are locked up in the Kodak amphitheater, or in fabulous ballrooms with the likes of Elton John. The remaining civilians of Los Angeles are home watching the extravaganza on TV, along with a billion other viewers at home around the world. The streets and restaurants are empty. Did I mention I was doing something unpopular, when I could have been holed up at home in front of my television? I was enjoying a most delicious dinner at an unusually unhurried pace with three servers and the maitreâ d, fussing over my party. On Superbowl Sunday, I had a similar delicious and gracious experience at the penultimate café by the beach. My party was fine dining by the sea while nearly everyone else was sticking a stale chip into a questionable mixture of avocado and who knows what. These are the rewards of doing something different than most of the rest of the world does, at least gastronomically speaking. Are you willing to be unpopular to get what you want and enjoy it? Are you willing to work while others sleep? Are you willing to wear a tie or whatever is the female equivalent, when your friends get to wear flip-flops? Are you willing to work Christmas Eve day, when all the secretaries are gone and the decision-maker just might answer your phone call? The path to success has never been more obvious than it is today. Winning personal brands are going against the tide of common behavior, attitudes and two-thumbed communication. You must be uncommon. Being uncommon Come in early and stay late. Take people to lunch â" not meet for coffee. Buy stationary and write notes (and mail them!). Buy someone a book that reflects your intellect instead of sending a link to its page on Amazon. Be cordial. Be curious. Be generous. Be a real friend. Be a great employee or consultant or songwriter, or whatever it is you are. Yes, the people in the next office, cubicle or table at Starbucks might sneer. You risk losing your regular guy reputation when you raise your standards. The fastest way to raise the odds of your being a success is doing what is unpopular. And, thatâs delicious. Police Positive Action - What Is It, And Does It Work
Police Positive Action - What Is It, And Does It Work In this article we will give you our thoughts on Police Positive Action, what it is, how it works and whether it is a useful tool or not for police forces to recruit the right people.Police Positive Action has been prominent in the new this week following the ruling that Cheshire Police allegedly discriminated against an applicant for being white and heterosexual. This ruling poses some tough questions for the UK police force for a number of reasons which we will discuss in this article. What is Police Positive Action? In very basic terms, positive action initiatives can be implemented by the police, and other similar organisations such as the Fire Service and Ambulance Service, to recruit under-represented groups. The legislation enables positive action to be undertaken around issues of sexual orientation, race, religion, religious belief, disability and gender. It is important to note that positive action is not positive discrimination.According to the National College of Policing:âP ositive Action is about creating a level playing field to enable people to compete on equal terms. It describes a range of measures which aim to eliminate unlawful discrimination and promote equality of opportunity.âSOURCE: College of PolicingOne of the key influencing factors for bringing in positive action within the police force is to build better relationships within communities, which in turn will result in a more effective service. To put this in simple terms, in order for a police force to be effective, the demographics of its staff should be representative of the community in which it serves. However, this can have potentially problematic issues for those people whom the police force is not looking to recruit, as indicated in the above article by the Telegraph newspaper. The candidate in question had done all he could to pass the police officer selection process and was, apparently, a star recruit. However, because he was not from an under-represented group, he was not offer ed a job as a police officer, which ultimately led to the court case. From what we understand, Cheshire Police are one of the first organisations in the United Kingdom to be found guilty of using positive action to discriminate by deciding to shun the applicant. Are the Police Force Right To Use Positive Action? Are the Police Force Right To Use Positive Action? In our opinion, the police force in general are caught between a rock and a hard place. In the past, a number of police forces have been criticised for not recruiting enough people from under-represented groups. In order to rectify this problem, some police forces have embarked on diversity recruitment drives in order to recruit more people from a wider section of the community. If they had not embarked on these recruitment campaigns, surely, they would have been criticised for taking no action whatsoever? On that basis, it could be argued that the police force has every right to refuse applicants who are not from under-represent ed groups, regardless of whether or not they pass the selection process. However, if we look at this situation from Matthew Furlongâs perspective, he has every right to feel he was discriminated against. He worked hard to prepare for the police selection process, including the application form, role play scenarios, interview and police written tests, only to find he would not be accepted because of gender and sexual orientation. If this is the case, and he was discriminated against as per the ruling of the court, he basically wasted his time going through the entire police recruitment process because he had no chance whatsoever of succeeding.Do You Agree With Positive Action Within The Police Force?Weâd be interested to know what you think of this case and in particular whether or not police positive action is a good thing, or bad for police recruitment? 5 Things You Can Do To Simplify Your Hiring Process - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
5 Things You Can Do To Simplify Your Hiring Process In todayâs shaky economy and overcrowded job market, hiring isnt a piece of cake. Facing an influx of hiring tasks and responsibilities, recruiters rarely ever get the chance to think about their practices. Have you ever considered your hiring standards? Maybe your strategies confuse applicants or youre wasting their time on unclear job listings and tedious application processes, which are especially off-putting to talented candidates. Either way, when it comes to hiring, there is always room for improvement. Here are five things you can do right now to simplify your recruiting practices. 1. Write informative job descriptions This is easily the most important point. By publishing job postings with vague descriptions, you can only give the wrong impression â" that you didnt properly profile the job; youre not sure who youre looking for or you just resorted to cutting and pasting from a different job offer. Instead, use specific language. List all tasks required of the position, explain the benefits of the position and be precise â" mention crucial skills, competencies, and knowledge. This way, candidates will screen themselves before applying, saving you time to focus on those who really match the profile. 2. Be clear about what to expect Interviews can be stressful for candidates and you need to be aware of that â" even the most qualified of them might crumble under pressure and you might lose some great talent. Describe the process in detail before the interview to let them know what to expect. Give candidates maximum amount of information to help them prepare for this interview. If youre hiring programmers, let them know if youâll test their code-writing skills on site. If youre planning a role-play or some truly abstract questions, make sure theyre prepared for it. Nobody likes surprises and adding more tension to an already stressful situation wont help your cause. 3. Give constructive feedback Once the interviewing process is over, candidates are eager to learn about its outcome. Most of the time they have no idea whatsoever about how it really went and thats when you come in and provide some valuable, constructive feedback. Be prompt and direct. If a candidate made a disastrous mistake during the interview, let them know. Crafting a thoughtful rejection notice isnt easy. Make sure to be precise when delivering your negative post-interview feedback. Even though people generally dont look forward to receiving bad news, this kind of message is hard to argue with and gives candidates an idea on how to improve their skills. 4. Simplify the application process If youre stuck looking for true talents, have a look at your application system and review it, judging how easy it is to apply and whether there are any technical problems. If uploading a resume takes too long or the data entry form is unclear, you can only imagine that qualified candidates will simply go away. Just ask yourself this question: is my application process too time-consuming? If it is, remodel it. Remember about confirming the receipt of the resume; this is one of the most often voiced complaints. Candidates dont want their resumes to fall into a black hole. A swift confirmation can only positively impress talented employees. Tauseef Alam, CEO of DistanceEducation360 said in an interview, âbeing a startup, it was difficult for us to attract the good talent for our small organization, and then we worked upon our application process 3 times in last 2 years, and this really worked for us. Now we receive 2.5 times more applications for a job opening compared to what we used to receive before.â 5. Communicate Following every step of the hiring process, make sure to keep your candidates informed. Use the candidates preferred method of communication. As you can imagine, calling them at work isnt the best idea. Instead, go for e-mails. If your hiring process is simple and intuitive, you can be sure that it will benefit all parties involved.
